Kelly Farquharson, Ph.D., CCC-SLP is an SLP and an assistant professor and director of the Children Literacy and Speech Sound Lab at Emerson College in Boston, MA. Her research interests include school-aged children with phonological and language disorders, the effect of those disorders on the acquisition of literacy skills, and the cognitive, environmental, and academic factors that contribute to phonological and language disorders. Prior to pursuing a research degree, she was a school-based SLP in Pennsylvania. Description: This workshop will discuss the role of phonological representations as they relate to the development of literacy skills for children with speech sound disorders and dyslexia. Background information will include a brief review of relevant theories and application to clinical practice. A definition as well as some common myths of dyslexia will be reviewed. Audience members will be asked to consider the whole child when reconceptualizing how speech sound disorders manifest and are treated. Implications for assessment and intervention are included. Learning Objectives: 1. Identify the role of phonological representations 2. Discuss the risk factors and outcomes for children with persistent speech sound disorders as well as those with dyslexia 3. Discuss the SLPs role in facilitating literacy skills for children with speech sound disorder and those with dyslexia Choose "add to cart" some time before the webinar date. Although the recorded event will be available for viewing for two months, the assessment must be completed and submitted within 2 weeks of the live training to earn the certificate . After actively participating and completing a brief assessment, all attendees will receive a certificate of attendance for 1.5 continuing education hour. (For speech pathologists: The certificates of attendance that are supplied can definitely be applied toward the 30 Certification Maintenance Hours (CMHs) of professional development that ASHA requires to maintain ASHA Certificates of Clinical Competence (CCC), however this course is not registered as an official ASHA CEU course. The earned credits will not get entered into your ASHA CEU registry. Please hold onto the certificate as this can be used if your three-year professional development interval is audited.
