Presenter: Marianne Nice, MS, CCC-SLP Description: This presentation is designed for administrators, teachers, parents and advocates alike. We will review the neurobiological basis for dyslexia and the myths. Participants will examine the underlying linguistic components of early reading and how these components differ for individuals with dyslexia. We will discuss how achievement gaps are formed and how school systems can respond with appropriate MTSS/RTI models in place. We will also examine interventions that are best designed for students diagnosed with dyslexia and why they work. Teachers, parents & advocates will learn about the “must have” components of a multi sensory Orton-Gillingham based lesson plan and key questions to ask when evaluating such approaches. We will also briefly cover what to look for in strong IEP goals. Lastly we will learn about some of the common pitfalls that prevent students from making aggressive gains.
