Description: Do you have students who are picking up their phonics skills, yet still struggle to fluently read the words on the page? The importance of fluent reading has received a great deal of attention since the National Reading Panel’s report published in 2000. This webinar will examine the most recent research findings in this area and will share strategies that are proven to work. The presenter will also shed information on practices that are less effective and share a number of misunderstandings surrounding this important literacy skill. Neurobiological underpinnings that contribute to reading fluency will also be explored to aid participants in determining which students will have long-term challenges with becoming fluent readers. Participants will walk away with current theoretical perspectives on reading fluency and be able to evaluate and/or change current practices in treatment of reading fluency challenges.
• Describe the neurobiological underpinnings of oral reading fluency. Which students are likely to have long-term challenges with reading fluency?
• Discuss past and present theoretical perspectives of reading fluency and research findings regarding fluency interventions?
• Identify practices, which are proven to be successful for struggling students and discuss potential plans for implementation.
After actively participating and completing a brief assessment by March 31, 2017, all attendees will receive a certificate of attendance for 1.5 continuing education hour. (For speech pathologists: The certificates of attendance that are supplied can definitely be applied toward the 30 Certification Maintenance Hours (CMHs) of professional development that ASHA requires to maintain ASHA Certificates of Clinical Competence (CCC), however this course is not registered as an official ASHA CEU course. The earned credits will not get entered into your ASHA CEU registry. Please hold onto the certificate as this can be used if your three-year professional development interval is audited.
